I take the tape by one corner and either slap it down on the palm of my hand or on my thigh near my knee. I'll do this on both sides of the tape, and then try it. If it plays fine I leave it alone. If not, I'll take it out and smack it some more, then I'll put it back in the machine and turn up the speed and rewind it, and then fast forward it, and then try and find out where I left off.
