How deep is the ice for crying out loud? Is it stuck in mud sunk half way up
the tires?

A couple of inches of ice shouldn't pose much problem but I wouldn't jack it
for reasons of slippage as already mentioned.

Last week-end we had our winter carnival. Apparently there was 30 inches of
ice on the lake in the middle of town. That much ice will keep a car stuck.
They were driving all over it though and had plowed a skating circle with a
loader. Just north of town they drive logging trucks across the river this
time of year though they were a little late getting onto it this year.

Usually all you need to do is put the car in gear and nudge the gas a little
or rock it gently on the clutch.

The rubber will distort as it is stressed and the ice let go.

In the old days those big steel wheeled tractors used to freeze into the mud
and care was necessary not to drive forward as the tractor would flip up and
over crushing the operator so, careful farmers would use reverse but this
doesn't happen with a modern vehicle. It might still on some tractors
though, I haven't heard of it but probably it could.

A kettle of hot water might do nicely so long as the temperature isn't much
below 0 but really, it shouldn't be necessary. I have never once heard of
anyone getting frozen in around here, not ever.
