Lenny,

How do you get the first smooth, straight edge?  Running one edge against 
the rip fence while sanding a bit off of the opposite edge will not produce 
a straight edge.  Any imperfections in the edge against the rip fence will 
get transferred to the sanded edge.  Don't you need to construct some sort 
of offset fence arrangement to straddle the sanding disk to even come close 
to making this work?
