Larry, They are called risers or jacks. It is the 2 x 12 that you cut out for the steps. Some people use 2 x 10, which I don't care for. Damn... I am starting to feel stupid. What is a jack other than the one you raise a car on? Is this the entire step assembly or do I need to cut the upright and step parts in addition to this jack? Just measure the Height and the width you have for the steps and let the lumber yard worry about it. I believe it cost me about $1.50 a jack more than if I would have cut them myself .
