Don't know for sure, I wired mine together with the smoke detectors directly
into the house wiring so that they will all sound together. What I can say
is that when I first wired the lot together and before I connected them to
the mains, while I was waiting for someone optically enabled to double check
I hadn't lost track of the colours of the wires the batteries didn't last
long, maybe three weeks.

As far as I know though, the stand-alone battery units are good for a year,
seems to me they recommend changing batteries when you set your clocks back
in the fall.

They also make them which just plug into an outlet.

I didn't have any detectors until about this time last year, they make a new
law here in Ontario that there must be a working smoke alarm on each level
of a home. I decided it was time to bite the bullet and disregard the old
battery smoke alarm and of course should an alarm go off in the basement I
just know I would sleep through it . I installed a combination carbon
monoxide and smoke detector near the furnace and water heater and another
outside of the bedrooms in the new addition and a smoke alarm in the front
hall where the stairs go up. I have another combination one to go outside of
the bedrooms in the old part of the house maybe I'll get that in the wire is
in the attic and alive I just can't bring myself to make that hole in the
plaster and lath ceiling. A good excuse for one of those spin saws maybe
this summer. That will be two on the top floor but the stair well splits so
they could be partially isolated but I do meet current code.

Anyway that is a long way to say that I have never been suspicious about
carbon monoxide leaking but now that I have a detector I am glad. I can see
some corrosion forming on the hood of my water tank and it is comforting to
know that even a little leak will turn up and I am more comfortable about
waiting for the summer to replace that damn water tank.
