I do not know about how even, but I am planning to use a food container with a plastic lid. I will put holes in it that the seeds can fit through and just shake it out like a large salt shaker. /Then I will use a rake to loosen up the dirt.
This may not work well on a new bare area, but I think it will work just fine in the thin areas around my yard. Fertiliser is also a good thing to apply when you put the seeds out. You can use a chemical do everything and kill off the wildlife fertiliser, but this is not what I recommend. Get your soil tested and then apply the exact kind of fertiliser you need. This is an espedially good time to go organic. you may even find that some good lawn treatment will take care of the problems.
