It puts out ions into the air similar to if not exactly the same as what happens during a storm and that is why it smells the fresh air. It also has the effect of causing unwanted particles of dust and so on to become heavy and fall to the floor. You may find that for a while things in the room will become more dusty but that is just because the junk is falling out of the air. Out side of having to dus a bit more at first, it is a good thing.
