You are fortunate to have the pipe for free. When you add the cost of new
black iron pipe they become actually quite expensive. They are heavy too,
mind you mine are three quarters inch pipe which must be nearly an inch
outside diameter.

One other advantage is that you can always have extra lengths of pipe and
convert your supply of clamp heads to a variety of clamp lengths.

When clamping boards edge-to-edge take care to alternate the pipe clamps on
opposite faces as they tend to cause the boards to bow away from the pipe
side unless balanced from the other side. The force isn't exactly at right
angles to the long direction of the pipes.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Pipe Bluing Clamps

> Hi All
>
> I recently put together a flat pack kitchen unit and borrowed some pipe
> gluing clamps, I found them to be great so decided to make some.
> I first checked out what large sash clamps were available but found them
> to be expensive $34 just for one.
> I bought a set of pipe gluing clamps these have a 3/4 BSP thread in one
> end and screw onto a 3/4 pipe and the pair cost $17.95.
> I picked up the pipe for nothing it however is black pipe not
> galvanised.
> I cleaned the pipe up using emery paper and painted on a rust converter
> sealer and I am using a epoxy paint to finish them off.
> I made them six feet long and was going to cut them up making a pair 4
> feet and a pair 2 feet but my son said why not keep them that long, they
> are completely adjustable with a screw handle one end and the jaw slides
> along the pipe at the other end then locks off at the desired length
> required.
> If I get into a position where the six foot length is to long I can cut
> them off quickly with my steel cut off machine.
> So with a little effort I now have my own which should last for a long
> time.
