Hi Lenny, You certainly could. I have done it several times. I haven't had a pattern bit long but like it too though more often I use a slightly off sized pattern and a collar with a smaller quarter inch bit too.

You follow the pattern with the bearing and the cutter shapes the work beneath the bearing and therefore beneath the pattern. A flush trim bit has the bearing at the business end of the cutter.
