Larry, Once upon a time Sears sold a gizmo which they called a saw guide. It was a kit composed of two aluminum I beam looking bars each 4 or so feet long with another piece to join them together. This gizmo also included 2 C type clams which attached to the bar so you could clamp it to an 8 foot board. It was as handy as an extra hand when you were trying to establish a line on a long board for using a circular saw or marking the centers. It used to be about $20. Unfortunately someone needed it worse than I did and "borrowed" it. Cy, the Ancient Okie...

The lady I am dating knows less about this here Bob Vila stuff then I do. You guys do have me thinking about a strait edge type device that would locate on the end of the plywood as well as the parting line from which you might be able to take a center-to-center measurement. If this is a bravo sierra idea let me know. -----Original Message----- From: HYPERLINK "mailto:blindhandyman%40yahoogroups.com"[EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:HYPERLINK "mailto:blindhandyman%40yahoogroups.com"[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Cy Selfridge Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2007 11:52 AM To: HYPERLINK "mailto:blindhandyman%40yahoogroups.com"[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] Levels and chocklines Remember one thing, don't make it square, make it fit the house. I think the same thing might apply to your ledger board. (LOL) A 24 foot board might present some logistical challenges. One trick I might try is to place something on the wall at the point you want the bottom of the ledger to be. Place this it the center point so the 24 foot board could rest on it. Now, having done this you could place a 4 foot level on top of the ledger and manipulate it until it is level then secure the board to the wall. The only way I know to be sure the uprights are perpendicular is by the use of a level. It is going to take more than one person to make this an easy task. I don't think the brew will be a lot of help on this one. (LOL) To get the tops all level you will have to check the level of the floor and calculate how much to cut off each to compensate for the difference. If all else fails there is always the good old shim. (LOL) Now, for a chalk line substitute I use a 1x2. Place a nail or screw at the ends and put to 1x2 up against these screws/nails. String or wire is (at least to me) a problem as the string will give and your line will wander a bit. If all else fails have your wife mark and set the screws/nails on the plywood that way you can blame her if they don't hit the stringers. How do I go about leveling a 24 foot run of ledger board? What do I substitute for a snapped chock line to locate centers under the plywood? What is the most accurate way to make certain that my support poles are perfectly strait and the tops are level? I have some experience with a plumb line and it worked out ok however, I was hoping for something better. Regards Larry Stansifer Thou art rewarded for thy results not for thine efforts.
