For filling the gaps around the air-conditioner you might want to consider
that insulating foam in a can. Get the low expansion variety. It works
really well.

Hi Max

You are becoming a renovation specialist, it gives you much pleasure
when you try to achieve a project and after much sweat and some errors
it comes out well.
As well as this you pick up some tools along the way.
Well done.

Regards
Ray

I ordered the shop building without windows for security
purposes and also
to cut down on heat transfer. Today, Sue and I cut a hole in the
wall and
installed a window air conditioner. After cutting the hole I
screwed a 2 by
4 to the studs to simulate the window sill. Then I cut another 2
by 4 to
fit between the studs to be the window sash. I didn't fasten
this one in
place, the cut was a fairly tight fit and placing a bar clamp on
the outside
of the studs would deform them just enough to hold it tightly in
place.
Then the two of us lifted the AC into place. Oops? It didn't fit
through
the hole. She cut the hole in the siding with a jig saw and she
is not much
better at following a line than I am. So after some trimming we
tried
again. This time it fit side to side but there wasn't enough
room at the
top to lift the window sill catcher over the 2 by 4 that is the
sill. So, a
little more trimming at the top. We lifted it again and this
time it fit.
It's a good thing because I'm not sure we had a fourth lift in
us. I locked
the upper 2 by 4 in place by running 2 and a half inch screws
through the
studs into the end of the 2 by. Then Sue used cardboard and duck
tape to
fill in the gaps around the unit. We are going to get some
molding to put
around it and cover up the tape. Considering the discussion on
molding I
have need for a lot of good luck wishes. I also can gloat some
about wifely
help. She helps me pick out tools and helps me use them. What
are we doing
tomorrow? Installing another AC in her building. We learned on
mine so we
won't make the same mistakes on hers. She hopes.

Regards.
