Hello Larry,

I don't remember that particular thread but I will say that I prefer Robertson
style screws, number 8 or 10 for that application, they have a square drive and
generally they stick to the driver better.

Just right now there is a sale at houseoftools.com including an air nailer
designed for driving nails into joist hangers. The nose is shaped to fit into
the holes and it is designed to get into those tight places.

Dan might be interested in one for his deck project.

All I have ever used is nails but it can be a little awkward sometimes
hammering into those confined spaces. they also make palm nailers which I
understand make driving those nails easier but I have never seen one in use or
used one myself.

Hope this is helpful.

  Hi guys,

Here is an opportunity for some of you with a few brain
  cells left to look good.
I seem to remember something about some kind of a wazoo
fastener that was superior to the various types of Philips
head screws used to fasten joist hangers to ledger boards
and plywood to the stringers. On the other hand, I might be
mistaking this for an article I read about all of the
research that is going into spline drive fasteners and their
superiority over traditional hex bolts or Allen drive
fasteners. This entire scenario took place about a year ago
  so forgive the memory laps.
