Interesting, about two weeks ago on the Discovery channel's Myth Busters
they did a test on cars to prove or disprove the window myth. With highly
sophisticated equipment they determined it is more efficient to have the
windows down in city traffic and much more efficient to have the windows up
and the ac on while on the highway.
I don't remember the exact speed where the crossover had taken place. I
think around 50 mph.
As far as comfort the opposite is true. Driving in city traffic with stop
and go on a hot day with the windows down would be miserable. Oh, how I
remember those days.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Your thoughts on saving money while driving a
car-truck-van

Long ago I had this discussion and forgot the ending. with the price
of gas world wide the thought it is cheaper to actually run your car or
truck with the windows closed and the air conditioning on. Now add to
that you personally washed your car before leaving or spent $9.00 for
the full deal at an auto car wash. with this in mind with the windows
closed causing no wind resistance and long distance driving , would you
still say it is cost effective to 1. leave the ac on 2. wash the car to
keep resistance down to a minumum . your thoughts as a handy person
would be? Lee

Suppose for a moment that the automobile industry had developed at the same
rate as computers and over the same period: how much cheaper and more
efficient
would the current models be? If you have not already heard the analogy, the
answer is shattering. Today you would be able to buy a Rolls-Royce for
$2.75,
it would do three million miles to the gallon, and it would deliver enough
power to drive the Queen Elizabeth II. And if you were interested in
miniaturization, you could place half a dozen of them on a pinhead.
