Saw some plaster guys use chicken wire to cover large holes and then 
plaster over that until thickness is reached. "Also for smaller 
holes. Used waded up newspaper stuffed in the hole and then plastered over.
But before any new plaster is put up. You have to knock it back to go 
plaster. if not good, then you wind up just doing the job over.
