With some email delivery problems I did not receive everything on this
thread.
First there are two types of dado cuts a complete through and a blind dado.
The blind dado is used so that the edge of the dado is not seen. This is
mostly used for a fixed shelf where both edges, the side and the shelf, are
seen. A through dado is a groove that goes completely through the board from
back to front. This is the type I wanted to make.
I set the height adjustment so it was 3/8" above the saw bed. Because of the
design of the saw to make a complete cut the circumference of the blade just
goes far enough to make the cut. When the blade is slightly raised, in this
case 3/8", it is also pulled front. This causes the blade not to completely
cut through the stock.

Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] miter saw feature dado cutting

I am guessing that what Lenny means is that when you set the mitre saw for
a dado, it starts the dado too far forward, so that the back edge of the
saw blade doesn't go deep enough into the wood. Thus, the back of the
dado isn't full depth and makes a blind dado at that end. That's why he
had to put a spacer block behind the piece he was dadoing.
