Hi Dale.  The little neon lamp was in parallel with the switch.  When the 
switch is closed there is no voltage across it and the neon lamp is out. 
When the switch is opened the full line voltage is across it and the neon 
lamp lights.  The little neon lamp doesn't draw enough current to make the 
big light glow.  They have those switches in the hospital here in BG.
