Scott the anticipator in a manual type thermostat is there to tell it when the heat might reach the set point. Other wise the set temp will have to be reached before the unit shuts off and it will continue to supply heat till cool down. The anticipator shuts off the heating unit prior to reaching the temp so heat supplied till cool down will reach the set temp. Having said that, the temp can be adjusted warmer or cooler by setting the anticipator. However the proper way to set it is to take an amperage reading of the heating control circuit from the thermostat wires with the thermostat removed and setting the numbers of the anticipator to the real current requirements of the heating unit. If the settings are too far off, the therm burns up and will be really off or not function at all. If the anticipator looks black or burnt and or different colors from heat, it is at a very wrong setting. .....................bob
