It seems that the TV volume is often rather low. There are sometimes settings inside a receiver/pre-amp unit that will allow the amount of gain for that chosen device. However, you may find that turning the TV to full vol, or using a non-volume control set of outputs is the best way to get full gain out of the TV for adaquatecompatability. Whatever you do, do not plug it into the turntable input as it has an equalization set that will either sound *way too boomy, or distorted. In brief, yes this is common, it's with the TV, turn it up or see if any input channels have level settings.
