One method that works well for me, to center stock of any shape, for turning on a lathe is to use my whole saw set to cut a graduated set of disks of different diameters. I then pick the disk that most closely matches the end dimension of the stock that I am planning to turn, then center it on the end of the work piece by feel and mark the center point on both ends of the work piece with a punch inserted through the whole in the center of the disk. I then line up the live center and dead center of the lathe with the punch marks in the ends of the work piece and start turning.
