I thought it was only in the States where folks knocked down wild flowers and maybe a forest to clear the land to build a lawn which we become a slave to. Yes a slave. keep in mind all the recent discussions as how we will use weed and feed. spend money to water a lawn and then go out to buy an expensive lawn mower which will give you a new back ache or polutte the enviorment. If you really want to spend all the money why not donate a couple of bucks to neighborhood kids to go out and get a few buckets of night crawlers to add to your lawn but do not use those chemicals because then those dandelions will be full of chemicals before you can turn them into wine. actually a friend of mine, not sure which magazine but he ordered a crate of nightcrawlers from a worm farm in Canada and he had to have someone pick them up at the airport, then bring them home, soak the lawn and have someone assist in setting out these crawling critters in such a way there would be no over crowding . supposedly now his lawn is more lush and allows the rain to seep in as it should. lets us not forget to wear our baseball spikes to keep the ground or earth pores open. so you see. why wouldn't we be better off with what used to be called an" English " garden . at least for the front yard ? don't worry as folks in my house don't see it my way either. Now one last thought is an article I read a long time ago was how a man planted sections of his yard with things like crownvetch or other low profile plants , all this in hopes as he reached retirement he could one day retire the lawn mower. just a fyi as some begin a mowing season .
