Well then it depends a bit on what sort of paint was used, if epoxy you are in
for a struggle. If most other sorts then getting it off might be achieved with
a gel type paint stripper and probably a small one inch putty knife. I usually
sharpen one of those really good thin flexible bladed ones. You might want to
get some of that "liquid gloves" barrier cream or even disposable rubber gloves
if you can feel through them and of course safety glasses so as not to get any
gunk into your eyes it will burn like hell. Before applying the gel it might be
helpful to touch the paint with a little steel wool or sand paper enough to
break the surface so the chemistry can begin to work but don't scratch the
original porcelain any more than it already is, it will simplify the eventual
refinishing.

If you have something like epoxy paint on it, you will be chipping it off flake
by flake. Either way I would begin with a plan. Pick a relatively small area,
maybe a square foot at a time and work at it until you are pretty well
satisfied before going on to an adjacent area. Otherwise it becomes
overwhelming.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

What is the tub made of?

Is it a cast iron tub, steel or maybe glass fiber?

  Thanks.
