It can be done by first pulling it up in a corner then cutting while you 
have part pulled in the air. probably for most it doesn't matter. When I 
removed the carpet from the living and dining room I cut it into 3 foot long 
sections so it would easily fit in garbage bags. When I got to the 
underpayment foam pad I must have run into removing 1,000 staples.After 
pulling a hundred or so I gave my daughter a hammer and told her to have fun 
and take out her frustrations hammering in the staples. I knew that  the 
installers would use another 1,000 staples for the new pad.

If one has wood flooring under the carpet, how can you cut the carpet
