Larry, The starter worked via the key but no power to the coil. As soon as he hot wired the coil it fired right up. Not sure about the distributor, I believe that it has a rotor. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry Stansifer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:51 AM Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] car starting problem
Based on your description the motor will crank on the starter however he doesn't have any voltage at the coil. If this is the case begin working backwards from the coil to the ballast resister to the key-switch. In that old dog I doubt that the coil is on a fused circuit. I am betting a cold beer that the problem will be in the ballast resister, the wiring leading to it the key switch or the harness supplying current from the starter to the key switch. When he hot-shot the coil did he crank the motor with the key or by jumping the starter solenoid? Is he using an old-school points style distributor or is he using a later breakerless ignition system? -----Original Message----- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Lenny McHugh Sent: Thursday, July 17, 2008 9:04 AM To: handyman-blind Subject: [BlindHandyMan] car starting problem Hey all of you car guys, My neighbor is restoring an old Camero. He has a rebuilt 327 installed. After everything hooked up it was dead when trying to start. I remember that my dad's old 62 Ford developed a similar problem and the mechanic for a cheap fix ran a 20A line from the key controlled side of the fuse block to the coil. The neighbor ran a wire from the battery to the coil and it fired right up. Great sound with open headers. Anyway he is reluctant to do what was done to my dad's car. He is lost on where to start looking for the problem. I gave him my old continuity tester to help. Any suggestions?
