Hi Angel,
A question here, Why can't she turn off individual radiator?, she should be
able to.  If it's a case that the valves are too stiff to turn, then remove the
valve control knobs and get vice grips or a spanner on them providing they are
the old type and not the newer type of thermostaticly controlled valves.  This
is a common problem with old unused heating systems, and particularly with the
old style of valve. secondly, if she can't turn off the rads and is just
turning down the boiler, the rads on the outside walls will not freeze as she
is circulating hot water round the heating loop even if thoughs rads were
turned off completely. Yep, just a marginal amount of heat will prevent this
from happening. Thirdly, if she is unable to do the trick with the control
valves, and really wants to save money, she might be as well imploying a
plumber to shut down the boiler for an hour or two and pay him to replace the
control valves.
warm regards, of in the case of your friend, very warm regards.
Martin webster.

She must be very careful when turning down the heat and using other
heat

sources in a few rooms. The radiators on outside walls that are not heated

will be subjected to freezing and breaking. The cost of repair may be

greater than the savings.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] a boiler question.

hi list.

I have a friend who owns a home and now that oil and gas prices are so high

she wants to cut back on fuel. the problem is this.

the house is 120 years old, and even though the boiler is new the radiators

in the rooms are not. she can not turn off these radiators in these rooms

and the only other options for her is to turn the boiler down to it's

lowest setting and use space heaters.

I would like to know is there something that could be done to the pipes that

run from the boiler to the rest of the house.

what I am trying to say is can something be done to the boiler itself so

that only certain rooms get heat, because she doesn't use all these rooms

and she can not turn off the heat in them either. all suggestions will be

appreciated.

 thanks for your time, Angel.
