After more investigation into the i beam. dot dot dot The i beam is deeper than and sits lower than the parallel joists. The bottom of the i beam is about 7.5 inches below the bottoms of the joists. Makes some sense as the porch floor is a step below the main floor of the house, IE you step up from the porch into the house. So, that is why when the pipes duck just under the i beam, they are so much lower than the joists on the other side.
