It's not a matter of getting knocked around, it's the problem of ceasing like
it has done. I've never used any kind of lubricant on mine, and I learned the
hard way not to leave bits tightened in the collett. From time to time I'll
forget to take one out and unless it's on my table I will fight with it again.
My router table is much easier to remember to take the bit out because I put
the solid insert in when I'm done. I also lay a piece of quarter inch plywood
on the table to keep the table from getting messed up. It is a flat surface
after all and people feel they have to lay things on a flat surface even though
the tool box is right next to it.

I am so behind in my e-mail! Don't leave a bit in the router? I have to
admit, I usually leave a bit in the router until I need to change it for
another. It's on a router table so not like the bit is getting knocked
around or anything. Seems like it just needs a good cleaning, as I have
never done that yet.
I am guessing, sense no one mentioned it, I probably should not use a
lubricant in that, huh?

And never leave a bit in the collett if you aren't using it.

Max,

Sometimes it doesn't work quite that way. When my bit got jammed in
there, I used the wrenches to loosen, but at some point it just stopped
and wouldn't loosen any more. The collet was seriusly jammed. My
brother-in-law told me it happens and I should clean it out more often.
