I was just watching the Myth Busters. (no one should get paid for having that much fun) There is an old myth that it is cheaper to leave lights on as opposed to turning them off. They totally busted that myth. For an incandescent bulb the start up cost is the same as leaving the bulb on for 3 seconds. A florescent light used the most power for startup and the break even point was 23 seconds. They tested halogen, incandescent, led, florescent and compact flash. For all bulbs it is more energy efficient to turn the light off when you leave the room. To add to the equation they wanted to know if turning the light on and off caused it to burn out sooner. They rigged a timed switch that would turn the lights on and off every two minutes.
