Pull up all the pavers. dig out the trench a bit. lay in some heavy garden fabric, dump in paver base, tamp it down, another layer of garden fabric, then some leveling sand, and finally the new pavers. You could even run a bead of silicon between the pavers to prevent dirt from getting into the cracks and making a haven for weeds.
