This confused me too Lenny. How do you get a roof that is 9 and one forth
inches by 10 and a half inches, out of a board that is 5 and a half inches
wide?

Here are the instructions that the organization uses, I am a little
confused. It looks like the the sides are tapored which makes sense. they
want the sides to be lower than the roof, again makes sense. Now where I am
confused is how would you mount the roof?
The front must pivit for cleaning. the dimensions and instructions for the
bluebird boxes are:

Roof: 10 ½" x 9 ¼"

Sides: 5 ½" Wide, 9 ¼" Front, 10 ¼" Back

Floor: 4" x 5 ½"

Front: 5 ½" x 9 3/8"

Back: 14" x 5 ½"

Assembly:

1. Boxes made of cedar, cypress, redwood or exterior plywood need not be
painted. If paint is used, choose a non-toxic exterior latex paint of a
light color (to reflect heat);

2. Dimensions shown are for ¾ in. thick lumber;

3. The floor, sides, front and back can be cut from one piece of lumber
measuring ¾" x 5 ½" x 4 feet;

4. Allow ½ to 3/8 inch of space between roof and sides for ventilation;

5. Recess floor ¼ inch;

6. Use galvanized siding or aluminum nails;

7. Pivot nails should be exactly opposite each other, 8 inches above the
bottom of the front panel;

8. Insert the bottom board so that the grain runs from front to the rear
of the box;

9. The opening is 1 ½" in diameter and its center is located 7 ¼" from
the bottom;

10. The roof should overhang the sides so that rain water does
not
