The 2 things you can do are to make sure your filters get changed on a regular basis and make sure the outside unit is clean. Those outside coils get clogged over time especially if you have a cottonwood tree near by or a dog in the back yard. I think those units would last a lot longer if they were placed on the roof not on the ground.
