I think you can put the probe inside the oven 
while it is heating. I have a meat thermometer 
and you put the probe in the meat and there is a 
cable that extends out of the oven to the talking 
unit. I just press the button on the unit to hear 
the temperature. No need to open the oven to check.

As for accuracy, we did a test with the talking 
unit that we bought from Maxi Aids some time ago 
and the little round one that we hang on the 
rack. I suppose that is the spring type that you 
mention, but don't know for sure, but I know it's 
not digital. They both registered the same temp after about 11 minutes.
