I run servers, and I spend an unfortunate amount of time fighting spam. Most of it comes from Yahoo! or Hotmail or gmail accounts, bogus accounts opened by programs, and then used to spam.
I've read that the OCR is only about 40% accurate when solving the captcha, but just means that they have to keep trying. captcha is not a magic bullet.
