Since the projects are autonomous, this is hard to avoid.

In any case, there needs to be some method for getting the attention of the
administrators for a specific project.  If there were only a single forum,
that would be likely to disappear.

I think you've possibly created a lot of little communities, rather than
one
big community. One can think of lots of gathering places:

* Project message boards
* Stats fora
* Team websites
* Optimising and third-party programming groups
* Facebook
* Trac
* BOINC workshops
* these mailing lists

but they tend to attract like-minded people into their separate cliques.

I would love to see more interaction between project scientists, project
administrators (and I draw a distinction between those two groups), and
volunteer participants: with a view to enhancing a sense of common purpose
(scientific goals), rather than competition.
