Do not make the mistake in assuming that the forum discussions about credit
reflect the motives of the majority of the volunteers.  There's something
called the 90-9-1 rule, also known as "participation inequality", which says
that most participants are merely lurkers. See

And while it's hard to tell, becasue they are just lurkers, I'm guessing that
the majority of the volunteers do it because they feel like they are making a
useful contribution, and don't need to talk about the credits.

So I don't think it's as dark as you think, but taking a break is also not
necessarily a bad thing if you need it.
