I believe that the Windows Performance Counters are for the local
connection only. They tell you nothing about the connection of the LAN to
the internet. They cannot even reliably tell if a computer has a
connection to the internet.

Linux: it's pretty easy, using /proc/net/dev. I'll do this.
Mac: Charlie, can you see what's available?
Windows: the "Performance Counters" API and/or its documentation
looks pretty horrible. Rom (or someone else),
can you please decipher it at some point?
I need a function that returns total bytes sent/received
on all interfaces.
