Hi All,
First off, greetings, my first post - I probably would have posted on
the web forum BUT I can't sign up due to an error on the signup page
- so, second, I'd like to point out that there's an error on the
signup page which prevents new users from commenting on the
discussion threads there, including the NSF funding thread.

That done, I guess I'll post my thoughts on BOINC's future here
instead. Apologies in advance if this is a bad idea. These were to be
posted to the forum, but I can't sign up.

My 2c:
The discussion earlier in this thread regarding open-source
development models seemed promising to me, although I was surprised
by the lack of awareness about them, given that BOINC is an
open-source project.
Large open-source projects are sometimes managed by a "foundation"
such as the Linux Foundation, the Apache Software Foundation, the
Mozilla Foundation. The Apache Foundation occasionally adopts
open-source projects (eg. OpenOffice).
Loss of NSF funding doesn't need to be a big deal - with other
open-source projects, various contributors drop in and out, for any
number of reasons, all the time. But this does not derail the
project, it might slow it down, but the bytes are out there, and that
means, if it's a worthy cause, someone else will (eventually) pick it
up, and the project will (eventually) continue. The better the cause,
and the stronger the community, the faster this happens.
Also, Berkeley is home to many open-source projects, including
FreeBSD, and even has its own open-source license, so I suspect there
is inspiration very close to hand.
This is an opportunity to reengineer the management of the BOINC
project. Thank you to the NSF for helping us to get here. As the
bytes are now out there, I think issues which may arise due to the
loss of NSF funding will be transient.
