Today's top footie shorts
PETER CROUCH would swap his first England call-up for Southampton staying in
the Premiership.

The 6ft 7in Saints striker could become the tallest man ever to play for
England after being called into Sven Goran Eriksson's 23-man party for the
US tour later this month.

Crouch, 23, is banned for Southampton's do-or-die clash with Manchester
United on Sunday.

He said: "I am delighted to be in the squad but I would trade it for staying
up. That's the truth. Survival means so much to the city, the club and the
fans."

SEPP BLATTER claims Manchester United star Wayne Rooney needs 'a clip round
the ear'.

FIFA president Blatter also took a swipe at Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

He said: "As stars at such a high level, they have a responsibility to the
fans as well as the game.

"With Rooney it is a question of education. He should receive a clip round
the ear from the management.

"Mourinho is quiet on the bench - but he should be quieter after the match
as well."

Rooney, 19, was recently dumped by the English Schools' FA from appearing at
an Under-13s semi-final because they said he was a bad role model.

JERMAINE PENNANT has been given permission by Arsenal to play against them
on Sunday.

The Birmingham winger is still the Gunners' property ahead of his permanent
move to the Blues this summer.

But Pennant, 22, will be allowed to line-up against his former pals at St
Andrew's this weekend.

He said: "I think I'll be allowed to play as there isn't anything on the
game.

"But I don't have a point to prove to Arsenal. My point to prove is at
Birmingham and, hopefully, I am doing that with my performances.
"It will be nice to see the Arsenal lads again. But it is just as nice to
hear the reception I always get from the Blues fans.

"It's going to be a fun game for me and, hopefully, we can come away with
all three points."

league games of the campaign as boss Brian Little rested his big guns for
the play-offs.

But McAteer, 34, is itching to return at Victoria Park as Rovers look to
establish a first-leg lead to take back to Prenton Park next week.

Skipper McAteer said: "I haven't been able to put a tackle in for three
weeks.Now it's red-meat time."

Tranmere finished EIGHT points ahead of sixth-placed Hartlepool in League

a cup semi-final - the prize is massive."
