The French striker and club captain said Friday he
agreed to a new four-year contract with the Gunners,
ending months of speculation about a possible move to
Spain.
"I've never played in Spain and never will," Henry
said. "This is my last contract, this is where my
heart is."
Henry had one year left on his contract with the
Premier League club and had been widely reported to be
considering a move to Spanish champion FC Barcelona,
which beat Arsenal 2-1 in Wednesday's Champions League
final.
"I am staying to play longer for the club that I
love," the 28-year-old Henry said at a news conference
at the Gunners' training ground. "I won't lie, at one
point it (leaving) did cross my mind but I'm a guy who
thinks with his heart. My heart told me to stay."
"Arsene, the club, the fans, I couldn't let them
down," he said sitting next to manager Arsene Wenger.
Henry is set to earn as much as 130,000 pounds a week,
according to British papers. That would likely make
him one of England's two highest-paid players, along
with Michael Ballack, who joined Chelsea on Monday
from Bayern Munich.
The new contract means Henry will lead Arsenal out as
captain next season when the Gunners open play at
their new, 60,000-capacity Emirates Stadium. Arsenal
is leaving 38,500-seat Highbury after 93 years at the
north London stadium.
"Thierry has shown tremendous loyalty and he's done so
for the right reasons," Arsenal vice-chairman David
Dein said. "He's an iconic figure. It's a very big,
proud moment for Arsenal football club."
Henry said he came to his decision soon after
Arsenal's Champions League defeat at the Stade de
France near Paris. Arsenal played with 10 men for most
of the game after goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was set off
in the 19th minute. The Gunners led 1-0 on Sol
Campbell's goal in the 27th minute and held on before
Barcelona got two late goals.
"I thought the way we lost on Wednesday, I couldn't
let them (the fans) down," Henry said. "The game on
Wednesday reassured me of one thing I wanted to know
all the time: how far I can go with that team
(Arsenal)."

anyway, persaingan bakal makin ketat di EPL. Gunners
tetap punya henry dan juga fabregas yang mudah2an
makin bersinar di musim depan. chelsea sudah dapat
ballack, konon lagi nguber roberto carlos dan sheva.
MU lagi nguber "ronaldinho baru" (by the way, siapa
sih?. Liverpool juga bakal dapat sejumlah tenaga baru.
Spurs dapat Barbatov. Rovers, Bolton, Villa, Boro,
Everton, dll, juga diharapkan akan meningkat
permainannya.
Mudah2an EPL terus makin menarik, semoga gak dikotori
praktek-praktek tidak terpuji seperti di liga lain.
