WBC Launches Score Updates 2006-11-03 06:57:37 foxsports
The World Boxing Council wants to spice up its title fights by announcing
the judges' scores after the fourth and eighth rounds.
Instead of waiting until the end of the 12-round contests, the three judges
will reveal their scores at two intervals during the fight.
The experimental move ¨C approved at the WBC convention in the Adriatic
resort of Dubrovnik in Croatia overnight ¨C is aimed at reducing the
possibility of getting surprise, controversial decisions, and letting
spectators know how the fight is going.
The decision relates to a limited number of WBC fights and does not affect
boxing's other governing bodies.
The new system will be tried out for the first time in two WBC title bouts
in Tokyo on November 13 ¨C Hozumi Hasegawa's bantamweight defence against
Genaro Garcia, and Eagle Kyowa's strawweight defence with Lorenzo Trejo.
The WBC said Thailand and Mexico have also agreed to use the new rules in
upcoming fights.
Although the system was ratified by a majority of WBC delegates, national
associations are free to decide whether or not to use it.
"The WBC is always changing, looking for better solutions," said WBC
executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman. "We have been doing research and
looked at lots of issues for many years. There were even proposals that
scores be shown after every round, but it did not pass."
Sulaiman said the system will create extra suspense in close fights and
boxers, who are trailing on points, will be pushed to make late rallies.
"The fighter and the crowd will have the opportunity to know how they are
doing, injecting more vigour during the course of a fight," he said.
It remains to be seen whether boxing other's governing bodies will follow
the WBC's lead.
Not all boxing officials are in favour of the change.
"It takes all the drama out of it," leading British promoter Frank Warren
told The Times.
"The judges have a hard enough job as it is. What is to stop fans trying to
get a fight abandoned if their guy is losing."
