Zambrotta spots Spanish flaws

Ex-Barcelona star Gianluca Zambrotta believes Italy can unlock Spain’s
weaknesses in the quarter-final.
“Spain are a very technical side who move the ball around well. They
also leave a lot of space at the back, so if we manage to attack them
with intelligence then we can certainly hurt them.
“The tradition is not positive for Spain, as they always seem to go out
early into a competition. I saw them in good shape so far, but they have
defects too.”
The 2-0 victory over France last night secured passage to the final
eight in the European Championship.
It was important for Zambrotta to see Italy through to the next phase
after his howler handed Romania a goal in their 1-1 draw.
“In football mistakes can happen, otherwise there would be no goals. The
important thing is to overcome them as we did here with a great reaction
and desire not to make them again,” said the new Milan signing.
“We had more desire to win and qualify for the quarter-finals. We
achieved that and it is very important for the squad to move forward.
“Clearly a full-back has to push and defend, knowing when to do each and
not using up all his energy. It was crucial to go on to the pitch with
the right mentality and hunger.
“When you win and play games like this, that is the joy of answering
your critics on the field.”
