After a post on the PmWiki list advertising a new plugin there, I was
prompted to start thinking about capabilities for retrieving info
between multiple BoltWire wiki's, ranging from text, to info and data
vars. The capabilities would cover both local wikis (on the same
server) and perhaps even external wikis (elsewhere on the web). There
are some complexities to the issue, so I thought I post some ramblings
aloud and solicit feedback.

Suggested Syntax:

For include or source of page text, you would define an interwiki
entry and then simply use:
[(include wiki=interwiki:some.page)]

Sections would add the anchor, like: some.page#anchor

For data and info vars it would be

{wiki=interwiki:some.page:field)
{wiki=interwiki:some.page::field)

The wiki= part is to make sure the right markup rule get's processed.

Authorizations:

One tricky part is getting permissions to work properly. What can be
read on a wiki should be determined by auth settings in the wiki being
read. Basically anything a guest could read would be fair game. But we
might also set up special auth_keys, similar to the approach being use
currently for special forms, only a different prefix. Perhaps a
setting on site.auth.view like

test*: wiki_sister

would mean a page/data/info could be read if you used:

[(include wiki=interwiki:some.page&wiki=sister)]
{wiki=interwiki:some.page:field&wiki=sister}
{wiki=interwiki:some.page::field&wiki=sister}

To put it differently, if you knew the permitted wiki code, you could
read a wiki page that would otherwise not be readable. Again, based on
the settings of the wiki being read. If we used the interwiki entry
as the wiki code, we could simplify this even further, though we might
lose some flexibility in the long run...

Execution

To get this to work on a local server, we could write a simple plugin
script that reads (and caches) the distant wiki's site.auth.view page,
and grants authorization of the file based on that. Or for that
matter, we could put it in the core. Ideally, we could have a line
early in BoltWire's execution that calls the same script right at
start up when there's a page request with a wiki= parameter. This
would probably make it possible for wiki's on different servers to
talk to each other (albeit, it would be sure to be slow...

Search

I'm also going to explore the possibility of adding additional wiki's
to a search parameter so you could search multiple wiki indexes
simultaneously. These are some ambitious projects, but they are
something we could work towards if there is interest.

Any feedback?

Cheers,
Dan
