a built-in cache would be nice of course. it shouldn't be too
difficult either, since PHP has built-in output buffering
functions.

but i read (never tried them) that big speed improvements
can be achieved with server-side caching systems running
side-by-side with PHP, such as APC and eAccelerator.
but this is a road that can't be followed on shared hosting
servers, of course.

that would be fantastic.
maybe some kind of abstraction so that we could over time plug new
systems. for example i suppose the first database that could be
implemented is MySQL, which historically is the companion of PHP.
but with PHP5 we could also write a SQLite manager, with the big
plus that it doesnt need a database server (good for the cheap
hostings who doesn't offer the service).
it would be a BIG addition, worth the 3.0 step.
