Thanks Hans, That was one of my questions too. Didn't get around to asking. One solution might be to follow PmWiki's idea of using a capital letter for the field name, and rewriting the pattern to switch one way with a capital and another in the other. Of course, we'd lose some of BoltWire's case insensitivity (at least the first letter), but it's a possibility.
