As there aren't any parameters, using markup seems more
straightforward. Or do I miss a big advantage of using a function

Oh, I see. As DrunkenMonk and I used `[text`], the closing ] was
displayed with its escaping character `.

Otherwise lines with citations will be larger I assume.
