i do think we should disallow localhost as an option.  As a check you could do 
a reverse lookup on yourself, however that wouldn't work in call cases (like my 
bongo-test.info since it is on a nat'd address).  

One thought I had was:
  what if we tried an smtp connection to some server and did a helo and just 
parsed out the response.  obviously it wouldn't work in all cases, however it 
would work for quite a few...

tool. I tried it. It works. It was pretty easy.
