Sorry to hear you had a difficult experience :(
The documentation for the VMWare image wasn't better in the past - we've
never really had any good documentation for the downloadable VMs. There
are some notes here:
http://www.rpath.org/rbuilder/project/bongo/
I don't know where/if those are linked on the wiki; I only found out
because it was mentioned on IRC a couple of days ago.
Hopefully I can prod Lance or someone into putting a proper page on the
wiki, because the VMs are a really nice way of trying out Bongo - but
obviously, you do need a little bit of documentation :)
