1. In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash by Jean Shepherd See: http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/4284595 One of the funniest books ever written. This is the basis of the great holiday classic movie "A Christmas Story." If you have missed this one, you've missed a treat. Boston Globe: Mr. Shepherd has the true satirist's grip on his pen: he is humorous, sympathetic, and ironic all at once, an enviable skill and one that makes reading In God We Trust an infinitely satisfying experience. Review: "Shepherd has a fine eye for absurdity, for the madness and idiocy in all of us." 2. The Cider House Rules by John Irving See: http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/4284557 >From an Amazon.com review: This is no light read. If you like to read books that address topics like abortion, lesbian relationships, incest, and violence then this is the book for you. The characters are very well done. All of the characters are interesting and you can't help but care what happens to each of them. The graphic medical details I could have done without but like another reviewer said, this book will stay with you. It will also make you think. 3. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie See: http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/4284576 One of my all-time favorite Christie mysteries. This book was made into several movies and goes by a couple of different titles: Ten Little Indians for one. Highly recommend! Amazon.com Considered the best mystery novel ever written by many readers, And Then There Were None is the story of 10 strangers, each lured to Indian Island by a mysterious host. Once his guests have arrived, the host accuses each person of murder. Unable to leave the island, the guests begin to share their darkest secrets--until they begin to die.
