Hi, Jeff.  The other replies have answered your question, but I 
thought I'd add a pointer to the BookCrossing site's "frequent 
questions" item about the status codes in case it's of use to anyone

As others have noted, when you make release notes on a book, its 
status changes to "traveling" automatically. In cases where the book 
is passed along in some way other than a wild release - given directly 
to a friend, for example, or mailed to another BCer in trade - then I 
recommend making a journal entry instead of release notes, and setting 
the status to "traveling" yourself.
