Freya,

I got my two cats this same way...the mother cat (Maia) showed up pregnant at
a ladies house and delivered her five kittens the next day. She was clearly a
stray (dirty and very thin despite her pregnancy). This nice lady took care
of her until the kittens were 7 weeks old, but then felt like she needed to
turn them into the shelter (she was 87 years old and had just broken her
hip)...I
had gotten to know her and convinced her to just give me the cats. A friend
of mine does kitten rescue and took four of the kittens (who all found homes
with veternarians!)...and I took Maia and one of the babies (Gizmo). Wondeful
cats. I had Maia spayed...the vet said she was probably about 4 years old and
so
this was certainly not her first litter. I also had Gizmo spayed when she was
old enough. I wish people would spay and neuter their animals!

like the idea of a Promote Animal Adoption release. Several years
ago I was adopted by a pregnant stray cat. I think about the
thoughtless people who took her in. Some other thoughtless person
didn't get her cat fixed, she had kittens, and then some people,
probably with kids, came to see them - "Mommy! Mommy! Can we have
one?" A few months later they move out, and Mommy says, "Don't worry,
Fluffy can take care of herself, she's a cat!" They leave "Fluffy"
some food and water, and dump her, and of course she grows up an
alley cat, gets knocked up, but luckily finds me just before she gives birth.

Thanks to PetSmart, and a cat-loving friend, all of the little uns
found good homes; mama kitty has been spayed. Unfortunately, there
are too many "Fluffys" out there, and all too often they throw their
litters out in the wild, and those kittens grow up to be feral.
