You're asking the right person about good mystery
authors..
I'm re-reading the Richard Jury series by Martha
Grimes. She's a good author (must be, since I'm
re-reading, which I rarely do), literate, and some of
the characters are real characters! Start with her
first, THE MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF and go from
there. They can each stand alone, but I've found I
missed a lot when reading them as they came out. (You
really foreget details....and whole plots during the
intervening year between books.)
Susannah Gregory and her medieval character Matthew
BArtholomew.
Tony Hillerman if you like the Southwest.
David Rosenfelt if you like rich lawyers who don't
have to work but take on interesting cases for the
heck of it.
Lindsey Davis for the Marcus Didius ancient Rome
series (gosh , that one's good!)
Hope I've helped some! PJ.
